M-E Engineers provided the complete mechanical and electrical design for this new 1.5 million square foot, 600 bed academic/acute care medical center spanning three city blocks. This $1.4B million project, the largest teaching hospital in North America, contains an Outpatient Building, Diagnostic & Treatment Building, Inpatient Tower and Central Utility Plant. Each year, the facility will provide for nearly 350,000 outpatients, 175,000 emergency visits and 1 million ambulatory care visits. The healthcare campus has been designated as a 'lifeboat' facility for the region in the event of major earthquake or similar disaster. The Diagnostic & Treatment and Central Utility Plant are entirely self-sustaining for more than 72 hours with on-site storage of domestic water, fire protection water, waste holding and emergency power. The electrical design allows the building operators to serve the entire power load of the Diagnostic and Treatment building with on-site generated power during a utility outage.
